Some people suppose flexplate and flywheel are same auto parts. YES, they have some particular similarities, however, they are still different. This blog will let you know the main differences between these two parts.
1, they are installed in different types of vehicles.
The manual vehicles equip the flywheel, which is installed on the crankshaft. Besides, the manual vehicles’ clutch has a cultch disc that is between the flywheel and pressure plate. The flywheel along with the entire clutch are responsible for starting or stopping receiving power from the engine. As a result, when manual vehicles’ drivers shift gear, the entire transmission system will not be damaged.
Flexplate is equipped in the automatic vehicle. It is installed to the crankshaft and connects the engine and torque converter. The function of torque converter is as same as that of clutch in manual vehicle. As we all know, it is much easier for automatic vehicles’ drivers to change gears.
2, they have different thickness.
Apparently, flexplate is much thinner and lighter, this is because of the fluid coupling of the torque converter, which can erase the grinding of the clutch.
3, they have different repair and replacement cost.
I personally suppose this may be the point that drivers concern most. But which one is cheaper?
When your flywheel has problems, you may would like to replace it. The cost of replacing flywheel is depending upon models and quality. In general, the price of flywheel is from $20-$100. Similarly, the price of flexplate is approximately $20.
NOTE: CAN I DRIVE WITH A CRACKED FLYWHEEL OR FLEXPLATE?
NO! We highly recommend you to replace it, since driving with the cracked part is seriously DANGEROUS. In the meantime, the sound of the cracked part is very bad. If you find your flywheel or flexplate is broken, you need to go to mechanic at once to replace the part.
