Flywheel proves to be a metal disc which is positioned between clutch and transmission. Flywheel and clutch are responsible for delivering power and energy. Vehicle with manual transmission has this part. However, if worn, the flywheel needs to be resurfaced or replaced, which is depending upon its specific condition and age. The following signs can let you know whether the flywheel will be failed or not.

1, Slipping gears

When driver increases gears, slipping gears is more likely to take place. For instance, when accelerating vehicle, driver may increase the fourth gear to fifth gear, however, this process may be failed and the gear is still in fourth.

But slipping gears may also be caused by clutch issue. So if slipping gears take place, vehicle owner needs to pay attention to other signs to determine which part has problems.

2, Clutch vibration

When stepping on a good condition clutch pedal, driver should feel smooth. By stark contrast, if flywheel is going to be failed, driver can feel vibration when putting foot on clutch pedal or stepping on it.

Similarly, when releasing the clutch pedal, driver may also feel vibration. When this occurs, driver may feel the car could break down.

Clutch vibration is more likely to occur when driver starts to drive from stop. However, this may also take place when shifting gears. Clutch vibration may be caused by many clutch issues, for instance, clutch release bearing problem.

3, Burnt smell

If driver can have burnt smell when shifting gears, this phenomenon can definitely indicate both flywheel and clutch issues. The burnt smell is quite obvious inside your car. But when driver pulls over, the burnt smell may disappear. This is an apparent sign that flywheel or clutch has issues instead of the engine.

According to the specific smell, you can figure out which part is failed. If it smells like burning rubber or electrical fire, the clutch is more likely to be failed. But if it smells like burning toast, the flywheel should be cracked.
