Every driver must know clutch, but what is clutch? Clutch is an auto part that connects the engine power to the driving wheels. In a vehicle, the clutch is installed between the engine and gear box.
In terms of what the clutch can do, the functions are fourfold:
1, it is much easier for driver to shift gear;
2, the driver are able to stop the car without shifting to the neutral when the engine is not turned off;
3, the driver are able to move the vehicle more smoothly when car starts;
4, the driver can free the vehicle movement without engine brake.
There exist many kinds of clutches, namely dry clutch, wet clutch, single clutch, double cultch and so on. So, what main components of clutch are:
1, flywheel
Flywheel proves to be a large metal disc which is installed to the crankshaft. It can store and release the engine pulse. The flywheel provides one of the driving friction surfaces for the clutch friction disc. The flywheel can also assist the engine to rotate when the engine is running. What’s more, the flywheel provides a ring gear for the starter motor.
2, pilot bearing
The pilot bearing is not in all kinds of clutches, however, it is widely used for rear wheel drive engine. The pilot bearing is located in the flywheel or in the center back of the crankshaft. In addition, the pilot bearing is useful to protect the splines and the hub of the clutch disc.
3, clutch friction disc
This component connects the engine and transmission, and it is between the flywheel and pressure plate. The clutch disc can transmit the engine rotation to the transmission. It contains the following parts: clutch hub, clutch facing, torsion dampers and cushion plate.
4, clutch cover assembly
This part is installed on the flywheel. The main function is connecting and disconnecting the power from engine to transmission. By the way, it contains three parts: pressure plate, diaphragm spring and cover.
5, clutch release bearing
The release bearing is attached on clutch release fork. It can transfer the movement of clutch release fork to diaphragm spring to achieve disconnecting clutch disc.
6, clutch release fork
The release fork can move the release bearing in or out of the diaphragm spring. In the meanwhile, it is connected to the clutch slave cylinder.
